Wild Foraging Study Group: Acorn Processing – Saturday, October 17th

Price range: $10.00 through $80.00

The Wild Foraging Study Group meets at the same location every month, in Anna (Collin County), Texas.  Each month will focus on different plants in season, while also learning about the different growth stages of all the edible and medicinal wild plants present in the area.  The centerpiece of our early fall class will be identifying and gathering acorns from oak trees, and learning the full process to make acorns into delicious and nutritious food.

Description

The purpose of the Wild Foraging Study Group is to meet monthly at the same location, to explore nature’s ever changing expressions as the seasons progress through the year.  We will walk the land and take notice of the growth stages of the various edible and medicinal wild plants that are present, and have the opportunity to harvest and process in-season species.  Seeing plants at different stages of growth is an excellent learning tool for a more complete understanding of each plant, even if they aren’t ready to harvest at that time.

The centerpiece of our early fall class will be identifying, harvesting and processing acorns, which are the nuts of the oak tree. Acorns cannot be eaten raw, and the key to unlocking the edible uses of the acorn involve using water to leach out the astringent tannins, which otherwise significantly inhibit the digestive process and make the flavor intolerable. When properly processed, acorn flour is a rich, nutty, nutritious, massively underutilized wild food source! Of all plant foods in North America, the acorn was considered to be the most important food overall to the sustenance of indigenous tribes.

You will learn how to identify, collect and process acorns into delicious food, including pancakes, porridge, cookies, and other baked goods. You will also learn about the nutritional content, and get to taste the acorn creations we make.

We encourage you to attend our monthly study group events for a more complete learning experience.  If you can only attend one class, or can only attend periodically, please come anyway, as you will learn a lot of valuable information and skills during each class!
